FDA proposes changes to GRAS rule, advances 'white paper' on ultra-processed foods
The FDA has proposed a rule that would require manufacturers to notify the agency when determining that a substance added to human or animal food is “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS). FDA said the changes are intended to increase transparency around ingredients in the food supply. Additionally, FDA submitted a white paper with a proposed definition of “ultra-processed foods” to the Office of Management and Budget. Although the paper has not been publicly released, it has received criticism from the food industry.

Wheat Foods Should be Part of a Healthy Diet
Our friends at the Grain Foods Foundation have a tremendous amount of information about the nutrition of grain foods on their website. Grain foods, both whole and refined, contribute fiber, folate, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, iron, zinc, magnesium and calcium to the American diet. Many Americans fall short on several important nutrients such as fiber, folate and iron. So, enjoy your sandwich bread, pizza crust, pasta and more knowing that you are enjoying delicious and healthy food.
