Key Issue: Trade & Food Aid
International trade is critical to U.S. wheat growers, and our overseas customers demand high-quality wheat, which American farmers are proud to supply. The U.S. is one of the top exporters of wheat globally, with nearly half of all wheat grown in the United States being destined for international markets. NAWG and U.S. Wheat Associates – the industry’s overseas market development organization – work together to fashion trade policy priorities for the industry.
Wheat is the source of 20 percent of the world’s caloric intake and a dietary staple around the world. It is an excellent source of energy-providing complex carbohydrates, fiber, B vitamins and iron. The U.S. wheat industry is committed to global food assistance and encourages a program that includes the full range of options to help countries attain lasting and sustainable food security.
