As a wheat grower in your state, I am asking for your support in cosponsoring the American Farmers Feed the World Act of 2023, which would renew the role of American agriculture in the fight against world hunger. American-grown commodities, such as wheat, have always been a foundational part of international food aid programs and constitute roughly one in five calories consumed worldwide. However, over time, these Farm Bill-authorized international food aid programs have shifted from using high-quality American-grown commodities to making cash transfers and purchasing foreign-grown commodities. This shift has drastically diminished programmatic transparency and accountability while reducing the procurement of American-grown food for the world’s hungry. The US is the largest donor of in-kind food aid, with over 1.3 million metric tons donated in the 2022-2023 marketing year. The American Farmers Feed the World Act would restore the emphasis on American food by reinstating the Food for Peace program’s original purpose – allowing American farmers to share their abundant production to fight world hunger. This bill would further stop the misguided use of American taxpayer dollars to purchase food from some of our top agricultural competitors.
The legislation would also restore international food aid programs’ transparency, accountability, and efficiency. These three key issues are fundamental in ensuring that these programs can continue to be successful in the coming years. As Congress works to reauthorize the Farm Bill in 2023, we must promote the American farmer’s role in helping feed the world and counter the influence of our foreign adversaries by supporting this legislation.
